Stretching The Decorating Budget
A Tight Decorating Budget
The goal was to furnish a guest bedroom. Furniture in the other rooms had squeezed the budget down to a few thousand dollars. The style and finish needed was available at one of the mid-level furniture retailers, but the price was too steep. After several phone discussions and emailing of photographs, the plan settled around these pieces.
A used Hooker sleigh bed, double dresser, chest of drawers and night stand acquired from a local flea market for $245.
A pair of imported chairs snagged from a yard sale for $10 each.
The Face Lift
The pieces had superficial dings and scuffs. The existing finishes were in good condition – purposely selected so the finish did not have to be stripped away to start a new finish in order to save money. After cleaning and scuffing the furniture, two coats of a Valspar linen white lacquer established the base color. Wiping and brushing out a grey/brown glaze built the final look. Dry-brushing some glaze around the hardware areas, on corners and a few random places completed the distessed look. A coat of satin lacquer locked it all down. The over-finishing cost $1180.
The fabric for the chair seats was a tough decision. Pictured are the last two contenders – both from Robert Allen. The re-upholstery labor costs $78 per seat, and the fabric will be around $100.
The Hidden Bonus
The whole project came in at $1700, leaving some room for window treatments! Apart from the money, the pieces were finished to the exact color and style with more fabric options than offered by the retail showrooms. With some legwork and friendly collaboration: customized furniture for less!

Cedar chests, hope chests, and blanket chests are very common pieces of furniture that people send to the workshop for refinishing. Furniture like this tends to be from the family and folks treat them as heirlooms – passing them from generation to generation. It is always pleasant to see the grandmother’s chest installed at the foot of her granddaughter’s bed, ready for another lifetime of use.
This cedar chest is in various cuts of walnut veneer and is of the “waterfall” style on the lid. It needed some minor veneer repairs prior to refinishing in an amber toned lacquer. The compete cost was $420.

This was a very long extension table with two wide leaves. It could easily seat ten. The original finish had been damaged by water, magic markers, and various utensils. It had also developed a milky haze that obscured the wood. The legs and apron had loosened, so the table had a rather alarming sway. The complete project included tightening the legs and frame, filling dents and gouges, a two-tone stain, and refinishing in a robust hybrid lacquer. The cost: $1,020 – inclusive of pick-up and delivery.
